Physiotherapy for Children

We can provide a range of services that assist children and families to build their skills and address any concerns they may have around a range of physical and/or developmental issues. Below are just some of the ways our students and supervising physiotherapists can help children develop:

  • Physical skill development. For babies and young children, this may include skills such as tummy time, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking. For older children this may include skills such as running, getting up off the floor, climbing stairs, jumping, hopping, skipping, playground equipment, sporting and balls skills (catching/throwing/kicking/bouncing).
  • Balance. We can assess and support children who experience falls, tripping, find it challenging to stand on one leg or have difficulty with uneven ground.
  • Posture, movement or alignment concerns. We can investigate back, hip, foot or leg alignment problems, floppy/stiff/tight muscles, concerns with uneven movement or reduced movement affecting everyday life.
  • Walking pattern and efficiency.  We can assess and develop strategies to improve walking patterns, toe walking, limping, excessive tiredness or fatigue.
  • Developmental delays. Including assessment for suspected physical delays and collaboration with other health professionals to support overall development
  • Baby handling, play and movement. We can provide advice on infant positioning, baby handling, and using therapeutic play activities to encourage physical skill and overall development in babies
  • Muscle or joint pain in children.
  • Physical activity, sport and exercise participation. Development of skills for sport or physical education at school or physical activity in general can be explored
  • Neurological or other childhood conditions. Children with cerebral palsy, autism, developmental coordination disorder, genetic conditions and other conditions influencing child development can receive assessment, interventions and therapy strategies.
  • Co-ordination, body awareness, motor planning.Helping children to become more aware of their body in space, improve their coordination and ability to carry out and plan movements
  • General strengthening, endurance and core strength.

Clients/families we can see:
  • Children/babies aged 0-12 years of age,
  • Families who self-refer in,
  • Children who are not covered by Medicare,
  • Children/families on NDIS (eg Autism, developmental delay)
  • Children/families referred by another health professional (although a referral is not required)

We offer some more focussed services including:

‘Physical skills for school success’ screening service

For children aged 4-5 years of age and in kindergarten or early primary school, we can complete a standardised assessment looking at the development of their physical movement and hand skills (gross and fine motor skills). Children/families will receive a brief summary report, along with recommendations and suggestions to enhance their child’s physical skills. If needed, children may also be able to access therapy sessions to support their skill development.

‘Healthy moves 4 Healthy kids’ sessions (available from July 16th 2024)

for school aged children aged 5-12 years.  These sessions will include an initial assessment and physical activity sessions aimed at supporting a healthy lifestyle and healthy growth/development.  We take a fun, play- based approach to enhancing children’s movement and activity, while addressing any movement difficulties they may be experiencing.
